How do specialization and integration describe the brain's function?

Functional specialization suggests that different areas in the brain are specialized for different functions. The functional role, played by any component of the brain, is defined largely by its connections. Certain patterns of cortical projections are so common that they could amount to rules of cortical connectivity.
