the insects are attracted to the polysaccharide rich thick resin that seeps from the trees. This resin is highly nutritious but has one problem for the insects- its complete lack of viscosity. The thick resin entraps the insects at the bark, and the tree continues to grow outward and in doing so, fossilises the insect alive.
